Max Savage

A tapestry of the city’s late-night underbelly describes Max Savage’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival Nobody Knows My Name. Written especially for this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Adelaide homegrown rocker Max Savage joins forces with some of Adelaide’s finest musicians to paint a gritty and vibrant portrait of the city’s nightlife and culture. Drawing together influences from blues, soul and classic big band, get ready to be immersed in this melancholy likeness of the City of Churches when the sun goes down.

Are you looking forward to performing at The Famous Spiegeltent for Adelaide Cabaret Festival?
I’ve been going to shows at the Famous Spiegeltent since I was a kid so getting to play there is a real dream come true. It’s a beautiful venue and a wonderful space to be in as a punter. I can’t wait to tread the boards!

This show is a little different from your usual performances – what inspired you to create an Adelaide-themed show?
I guess everything I do is based around who I am and where I come from. I don’t think there’s any way you can hide that – this city is the place I come from and it’s only natural that I would make music that reflects it.

Will you be performing with your usual band for your Cabaret Festival show?
I tend to put bands together for specific events. Different musicians bring different flavours to a performance. At the Cabaret Festival I’m chuffed to play with my good friend Brenton Foster who was in the very first iteration of the False Idols. I’ll also be joined by the inimitable Kyrie Anderson, the fabulous Django Rowe, the mellifluous Tom Kneebone and the wonderful Kiah Gossner.

What is next for Max Savage after the Cabaret Festival?
Definitely a cup of tea and a few days off. We’re playing in Wudinna as part of the Adelaide Guitar Festival’s Guitars in Bars program with our podcast, The Family Bushdance later in the month and we’re always at our usual haunts as well.
