This week in The Singles Bar #17, Hi Fi Way: The Pop Chronicles features:
Following the release of the DREAMS single No One Defeats Us comes its powerful, arresting video. Shot earlier this year by DREAMS and Jon Shoer in Los Angeles, it features standout performances from Daniel and Luke against a backdrop befitting the explosive track.
DREAMS is a collaboration between Daniel Johns (aka Dr Dreams) and Luke Steele (aka Miracle), No-one Defeats Us the first song the famous musical duo wrote together. Daniel explains, “No One Defeats Us says lyrically what our goal is, it’s a journey into our vision of the future.”
“Dan and I excel and struggle on similar levels” says Luke. “We have so much passion and we are so ambitious. That song came from a time when we were beginning the band and we needed something deep. I wanted to build a gang – like a gang of the future. We want the band to be for the common man, the underdog, the homeless, the person who shows love to his neighbour.”
Fresh off the back of shows with US artist Angel Olsen in Melbourne, Melbourne’s mystic psychedelic rocker Moonlover is psyched to release the music video for new single Lazy Daisy, and announce a single launch at the Old Bar in April with special guests. Lazy Daisy is the latest cut from Moonlover’s debut album Thou Shall Be Free, out now through Our Golden Friend / Island Records.
The video for Lazy Daisy shows Moonlover – aka Quang Dinh formerly of Little Red – wandering through a picturesque park and observing the simple things in life. Old friends playing a game of bowls, two lovers watching the clouds, a father and son walking by the pond. On the video, Dinh says, “I was 30 days sober, and feeling like a bit of the fog had lifted, it was a Sunday, the sun was bright and clear, and the people were feeling good.”
North London soul-pop sensation Zak Abel has unveiled his brand new track Love Song. Love Song is yet another example of the young singer’s remarkable knack for euphoric and uplifting song writing. Zak worked with legendary pop producer Steve Mac (Charli XCX/Ed Sheeran) on the track, and the partnership has resulted in a song that marries Zak’s raw and spine-tingling vocals with Mac’s trademark production and is sure to be an instant fan favourite.
Zak had this to say about the song, “I’ll be honest with you, love song is the first ‘angry song’ I’ve ever put out. It’s about distancing yourself from the people that keep you down and the negative perspectives that no longer serve you. It’s also about reclaiming your self-respect and living in line with your values again. It’s an important song for me, but it’s not a love song!”
California metal veterans IMPENDING DOOM have announced a new song today titled The Wretched and Godless. The new track is the first song being released from the band’s all-new LP due this summer, and the first bit of new music fans have heard in over 5 years.
“The wait is over! After 5 years, we’re happy to be back with a new record,” says the band. “We wanted to write a heavy straight to the point record that our genre of music seems to be lacking today.“
IMPENDING DOOM will release their sixth studio LP called The Sin and Doom Vol. II on June 22, 2018, via Entertainment One. All pre-orders are available now. The new album will be the widely anticipated follow up to Death Will Reign (2013), which sold 4,300 copies its first week of release and debuted at 116 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
Legendary funk duo Chromeo unveils Must’ve Been featuring multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer DRAM and guitarist Jesse Johnson (Prince, The Time) with a new video. Watch the Dugan O’Neal-directed clip, which traces the two-piece’s decades-spanning friendship.
The track is the latest single from their highly anticipated forthcoming album Head Over Heels, set for release June 15 on Big Beat/Atlantic Records. Must’ve Been sees Chromeo effortlessly moving toward more of a live sound, packed with signature guitars, synth swells, gospel flourishes and a surprising performance from DRAM.
Gaz Coombes has released a video for the second track from his forthcoming album World’s Strongest Man. Built from a twisted bassline, space-aged gospel vocals, swooping strings and lo-oscillating synths Walk the Walk is a sleek, sinewy and thoroughly addictive mediation on the dangers created by, as Gaz says, all of the “misguided, delusional men that are making the world worse for everyone else” – the unstable men who seem to be in positions of power all over the planet. The prismatic video for the song – directed by Najeeb Marc Tarazi – takes place at the heart of a tense, kaleidoscopic Californian card game.
Gaz says of the video: “It’s my pleasure to present to you the new video for Walk The Walk! Created and directed by the very talented Najeeb Terazi and filmed in LA last month. And keep an eye out for my cheeky cameo. Hope you all enjoy” Gx

ShockOne reveals the awesome new Matsu/No Labels directed video for Bleed Black featuring vocals from Cruz Patterson of Koi Child. It was premiered this morning via the UKF Dubstep channel.
ShockOne, Karl Thomas comments “I’m super excited for the Bleed Black clip to finally be out. It was fantastic working with Matsu and No Labels media again, and once again they have out done themselves in producing an amazing video clip. Cruz Patterson put in a killer performance, and I want to thank all the extras that worked on the shoot, you guys killed it. This clip represents another fragment of the Dark Machine world that I am currently working on. I feel the clip is a great visual representation of the tune and further enhances the raw energy of the track. It’s always such a great feeling when a video comes out exactly the way you envisioned it in your mind. Hope you dig!”
