After hearing all about the brilliance of this show from friends in 2017, my family and I were keen to get a taste of Africa ourselves. With a new show for 2018, Cirque Africa 2.0 delivers up a colourful and vibrant celebration of African culture, music and fun. 22 young performers from four African nations delighted an excited audience with an array of acts including acrobatics, dancing, contortion and music. The two amazing balancing acts on ladders, cylinders, boards and a basketball were the highlights of this show for me, demonstrating some awe-inspiring feats of concentration and core strength. The percussionist/bongo player was great, exhibiting some spectacular bicep stamina by pounding and banging for the whole 60 minutes.
There were lots of OMG moments in this show, many of which had audience members cringing or stunned by feats of contortionism – the young female contortionist being exceptionally beautiful and mesmerising. Hula hoops, unicycles of varying sizes, and an act of audience participation lead by Papa Ruddle all seamlessly came together to present an amazing hour of Fringe-worthy entertainment.
The venue in Hindmarsh square was comfortable with toilets, air-conditioning and good seats. I only question whether the ticket price could have been more affordable and accessible to more people if they had not been located in a stand-alone venue. That said, Papa Ruddle claims to gladly refund ticket prices if audience members aren’t fully entertained – which I’m sure you will be. I suggest watching out for cheap Tuesday tickets or look for halftix deals if money is an issue.
The Fringe festival welcomes acts from a diverse range of nations and it is wonderful to see so many great performers visit Adelaide in Mad March each year. I hope Cirque Africa continues to visit Adelaide and Australia in future years so more children and parents alike can experience the vibrancy and magnificence of African culture.
