This week in The Singles Bar #10, Hi Fi Way: The Pop Chronicles features:
When I Am Old is the second single from Augie March’s forthcoming album Bootikins, coming out on Caroline Music/UMA on 23rd February 2018.
This captivating new song, with raw lyrics from lead singer Glenn Richards has already been spun on Double J. Look out for the When I Am Old official video coming soon.
Here’s what Glenn Richards had to say about the new single – ‘“Though I look old, yet I am strong and lusty” which is as I would like it, sadly there are many down sides to ageing to which wisdom and viagra are but temporary barricades to an onslaught as assured as Death’s arrival, which, clippity clop, whirring scythe and ragged flapping robe, is close by always and breathes heavy as the sand in the cup more empty slips, rapid ashes, down the dark funnel of dementia. So, fools, “play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die. That strain again!”
Yoko-Zuna return with the release of latest single Day Job. Featuring vocals from long-time collaborators SWIDT, the single showcases another side to the eclectic Yoko-Zuna sound.
Created by both Yoko-Zuna and SWIDT, the track features the trademark confident vocals from Spycc & INF, sitting perfectly alongside the unique instrumentation of Yoko-Zuna. While the two have performed live together for a number of years, this marks their first collaborative release.
Performed live for the first time at Rhythm & Vines and Rhythm & Alps festivals over the new year period, Day Job is driven by an upbeat saxophone hook from JY Lee, perfectly complimenting the laidback vocals. The single arrives alongside an animated video from The Makers Initiative.
The video, an underwater masterpiece, features Yoko-Zuna and SWIDT in an epic party under the ocean.
After a huge 2017, complete with ARIA nomination and #1 ARIA album, Busby Marou return in 2018 with the video for their new single Got Your Back, shot on their island home, Great Keppel Island.
Busby Marou will embark on their first headline tour of New Zealand next week. You can next catch them on tour in Australia next month at A Day On The Green with James Blunt and Pete Murray.
British songstress Mahalia has unveiled her brand new single Proud of Me which features the incredibly talented London based rapper, Little Simz.
Produced by Maths Times Joy – who produced Mahalia’s stand-out debut single Sober – the track is a perfect example of the truly relatable song writing that Mahalia has become so well known for. A rich mixture of Soul and R&B, the track encompasses the classic sounds of the past while refusing to be hemmed in by one particular genre; her open-hearted lyricism holding it all together like magic dust.
Mahalia says – “I wrote this tune not long before my Birthday last year. It the first time in my short music career that I had stepped out on my own. I stumbled for a while I think… tried to get my priorities straight. But, once I understood that, everything kind of fell in to place. The one thing I have always said that makes me truly happy is knowing that my family, friends and you guys are proud of what I have achieved. I’ve always wanted to work with Lil Simz. So, this was crazy for me. She gave me all the extra magic that I needed.”
Canadian singer-songwriter Scott Helman will perform two intimate shows on his first ever Australian visit next month! Helman will perform at Sydney’s OAF Gallery on Wednesday 14th February followed by Melbourne’s The Toff on Friday 16th February. Tickets are on sale now.
Helman’s infectious new single PDA, is the latest cut from his debut full-length album, Hôtel de Ville. Hôtel de Ville channels musical influences as diverse as Arcade Fire, The Cure, Bon Iver and Bruce Springsteen, and places Helman at the centre of cutting-edge guitar-driven pop.
Indigenous Australian Hip Hop act INDIGENOISE are excited to share their new single and video Euphoria and the simultaneous release of the remix by London based producer M.A.X.
Euphoria is the follow up to the band’s debut single ‘Wildfire’ which reached #1 on the Triple J unearthed Electronic and Hip-Hop charts and an impressive #4 on the overall Chart. INDIGENOISEvocalist Roslyn Barnett describes Euphoria as a song that has “passionate outbursts of ecstatic eruption, and is a call to the band’s ancestry, a reconnection to themselves, tantric and tasteful.”
The companion video for Euphoria was created by International award-winning director David Barker (Stonefield, Powderfinger, Nightingale Floor and Butterfingers), head of Playground productions in Sydney. Filmed at Carriageworks in Sydney, the venue was transformed into an LED forest for the clip. One of the band’s first forays into video creation and production they said, “It was definitely an incredible first peak into the behind the scenes of professional film making – and a full day of hair, makeup, coffee, lighting changes, patience, action and more coffee!”
Without dipping a toe in trepidation, but rather jumping headfirst into the deep end, Flowertruck splash around in the nostalgic, technicolour, sonic joy in single Enough For Now alongside the announcement of their debut LP Mostly Sunny, out March 16 and an April headline tour.
Known for their upbeat melodies decorated with hooky guitar runs and vocalist Charles Rushforth’s quintessential Aussie twang, new single Enough For Now is everything fans have come to love from Sydney’s Inner West sweethearts. The single is a sun drenched, summer slow burner – swirling synth and melancholy lyrics are complimented perfectly by fuzzy, early 90’s inspired visuals. Showcasing an array of inconveniences only mild enough to induce an eye roll (burning the toast, a broken thong and rickety chairs) the four piece tackle the everyday annoyances with charm and ingenuity, like a team of super heroes in socks and sandals.
Calum Scott is joined by vocal powerhouse and 3-time Grammy nominee Leona Lewis on a stirring rendition of his hit single, You Are The Reason. You Are The Reason, the lead single from Only Human, has just been certified Gold in Australia. The nation fell in love with the song when it aired over summer in a stirring scene in Home And Away, driving it to a #2 positon on iTunes. Calum talks about the inspiration behind the track, which he calls “the most special song on my album,” in this clip. Combined streams of You Are The Reason have surpassed 70 million worldwide while views of the official video topped 20 million in the first two weeks and are now surpassed 40 million.
Three-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated and BRIT Award-winning multiplatinum singer, songwriter, and artist James Bay returns with his brand new single Wild Love.
While some fans might call Wild Love a new sound for Bay, on this Bay explains: “I know some of this new sound was not apparent on my first album – there were hints, perhaps – but I think my new music helps to paint a fuller picture of who I am. As soon as I recognized I was being pinned down as ‘the intimate acoustic guitar guy’ I realized I knew I had to push myself musically. I want it as part of my arsenal, but I don’t want that solely to define me. I’m not there yet, but hope that this new music can do for singer-songwriter, loosely, what Drake and Chance The Rapper are doing for their genre: tearing up the rule book.”
On the song Bay stated: “Wild Love is about the experience of falling for someone. Something you can feel immediately when you meet them for the first time, or which rekindles throughout a relationship. It’s also about yearning for someone – whether that’s the person you can’t keep your eyes off across the room, or in my experience, the person you don’t stop thinking about wherever you are in the world.”
Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks release new single Middle America — the first new music to surface from the group since 2014.
On Middle America, Malkmus’s wry wordplay and sunny twang create an ode to underdogs everywhere, with bittersweet words of encouragement for the ramshackle character on their receiving end. Only SM & the Jicks can craft this kind of brightly low-key anthem, a perfect three-minute-thirty-second country-speckled gem about life’s questions big (the inevitable passage of time; aging) and small (getting shitfaced; blushing the color of Robitussin).
The Presets continue their trail blazing return, unveiling the kaleidoscopic, mind altering video for new single, 14U+14ME, at the same time announcing the title of their highly anticipated fourth studio album – HI VIZ.
14U+14ME is the second sonic revelation from HI VIZ. The accompanying video was created by NYC production company Georgia, Julian Hamilton explaining it succinctly as “a cataclysmic, freak-out created by US director duo Georgia… they basically crushed planet Earth with this one – thanks guys. Hope you all like it as much as we do”. The track’s distinctive cover art comes from long-time collaborator Jonathan Zawada who has also worked with Flume over recent years.
Every story has to start somewhere; for beloved Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins it all starts with a futon couch. That’s where she was sitting when she first met the man who would become her husband. And that’s also the story she tells in her new single that was unveiled
The first step on that journey is Futon Couch …
“This is the happiest song on the record, so I wanted to start with it”, Missy explains. “It’s not often I write a straight-out, “f**k it I love you” song. It is the story of me meeting my husband in Broome, Western Australia. He was my good friend’s housemate and one day he walked into the living room where I was waiting for my friend. I sat on the Futon Couch making small-talk with him while he did the dishes and I thought: “where did THIS guy come from and why is he so lovely and how can I surreptitiously arrange to hang out with him more?” After that day, I popped round for tea at my friend’s house way more often. We fell in love. We sang “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” together at our friend’s wedding the following week and a few years later, I walked down the aisle towards him. This single tracks the beginning of our relationship and follows it into an unknown future.”
Multi-disciplinary Toronto artist Meg Remy has released a fourth new U.S. Girls song and video for Rosebud from her forthcoming album, In a Poem Unlimited. A breathless synth anthem written by the legendary Rich Morel with Remy, Rosebud’s stunning accompanying video, directed by Alex Kingsmill, edited by Remy and starring Max Turnbull.
In a Poem Unlimited, the sixth full-length album by U.S. Girls, will be released on February 16th and includes the singles, Pearly Gates, Velvet 4 Sale and Mad As Hell. A dizzying buffet of live grooves, its 11 songs are character studies of women grappling with power and dark reflections on acts of violent. Brought to life by an impressive body of talent – including Toronto collective The Cosmic Range and long-time collaborators Max Turnbull and Louis Percival – In a Poem Unlimited may well be Remy’s most individually distilled protest to date.
Black Foxxes have released a new video for single, Manic In Me. The song is the second to be revealed from forthcoming studio album Reiði.
Iceland, with this unique and spectacularly scenic land, provided a primary source of inspiration for the writing of forthcoming album Reiði (the Norse word for rage); and so, the band (Mark, Tristan and Anthony) felt it vital that the video for Manic In Me be shot there.
Mark Holley, Black Foxxes frontperson, says, “This song is purposefully written to have a pop structure, I wanted the song to sway back and forth in a repetitive manor to inject the listener with the hooks. The song is about balancing inner rage and calm; ‘You are the weather’ refers to feeling still and serene amongst another’s company; ‘I am the manic in me’, quickly interjects that, on my own, I can’t control the inner manic. It’s this back and forth that continues throughout the song, quickly transitioning between verses and chorus without any chord changes, keeping the listener guessing which side the coin will land. Calm or manic.”
THE PLOT IN YOU have dropped their new video for single Disposable Fix, another incredible video clip, following their visceral Not Just Breathing clip. Their album Dispose is out Friday February 16 through Fearless Records/Caroline Australia – and it’s shaping up to be their biggest yet down under!
On the topic of the new single, singer Landon Tewers said, “Disposable Fix was written in one sitting, during a writing session for another artist. I latched onto it and had to keep it for myself. It’s a bit of a fuck you track and reflecting on a situation after everything had passed.”
The boys are back! Hellions have dropped their long-awaited new single X (Mwah). Alongside the unveiling of X (Mwah), Hellions have also announced they will be playing a very special hometown launch show at The Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney on Friday March 9.
The first piece of new music from the quartet since the release of their critically-acclaimed theatrical masterpiece Opera Oblivia, X is a defeatist ode to recklessness delivered via an ever-colourful riot of punk rock joy. The jam was first revealed in front of a frenzied capacity crowd at UNIFY 18
RIT-nominated star, Anne-Marie, and electronic mastermind, Marshmello, are delighted to announce details of their joint new single Friends.
Friends marks one of the hottest collaborations of this year and has all the elements of yet another Anne-Marie global smash. Marshmello’s stellar, throwback production combines with Anne-Marie’s next-level vocals, buckets of sass and, of course, matchless humour to create a sonic masterpiece. Recorded at Sarm Studios at the end of 2017, Friends is a continuation of a budding friendship – in 2016, Marshmello remixed Anne-Marie’s ARIA double platinum and Australian Top 10 breakthrough hit Alarm.
Marshmello, the anonymous Producer/DJ, is taking the music industry by storm. Becoming one of the fastest rising dance producers in history, he has received over two billion streams and counting, making him one of Spotify’s Top 10 most-listened to artists in the world. Catapulting his career with his official remix of Jack U and Justin Bieber’s global hit Where Are U Now, Marshmello has gone on to collaborate with a wide variety of top artists, most recently with Selena Gomez on Wolves, which hit #1 on the US Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and clocked over 300 million streams. His previous single Silence feat. Khalid has also received over 300 million streams to date and his debut album Joytime, that released in 2016, reached the Top 5 on the US Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
